What it is like
Pip is a beige retro computer with a big appetite, sitting in a sunny 3D meadow while acorns drift down from the sky. Every letter, number, arrow and space bar press, and every tap on the meadow, makes Pip hop up and catch the nearest one, so a keyboard smash is exactly the right way to play. Each catch adds one to the score, quick catches build a combo, and every tenth acorn brings a little celebration message. Hops and catches make short plucked sounds, there is no background music, and a mute button silences everything. There is nothing to lose: no timers, lives, wrong keys or game-over screen. A grown-up gets pause, mute, help and fullscreen buttons, plus a "start a fresh meadow" reset inside the help card, and the browser remembers the personal best. It is free, with no ads, accounts or tracking, and loads nothing from outside kidsmashgames.com. It needs a browser with WebGL, which is almost all of them, and downloads about 3 MB of models and code before the meadow appears.
What we liked
- Every key and every tap makes Pip hop, so a keyboard smash always does something
- A cheerful 3D meadow with a bouncing little computer, a score and combo celebrations
- No timers, lives, wrong keys or game-over screen
- Pause, mute, help, fullscreen and start-fresh controls for a grown-up
- No ads, accounts, analytics or purchases, and nothing loaded from other sites
What to know
- No parent lock: fullscreen does not block browser or system shortcuts
- A 3D scene with a score and progress bar is busier than a plain colour-and-sound smash
- Needs WebGL and about 3 MB to load, and the fullscreen button is hidden on portrait phones
Verdict
Our acorn-catching keyboard smash: one key, one hop, one happy little computer. Free, ad-free and ours.
Best for: A laptop keyboard smash with a bouncing 3D payoff, or tablet tapping on a bigger screen.
