What it is like
Jelly Alphabet is our alphabet game. Five fat, wobbly 3D letters float in a pale blue pool, and pressing any letter key on the keyboard — or tapping a jelly, or tapping one of the 26 keys in the panel underneath — makes that letter squash, stretch and burst into droplets. A recorded voice says "ay is for apple", the picture appears for a couple of seconds, and then a fresh letter rises in its place. Only letter keys do anything, so a child mashing the keyboard cannot wander into a menu, and pressing a handful at once does not build a backlog: the picture on screen stays put and only the most recent letter is popped next. An older child can work through the A–Z panel, which fills in a dot for every letter found, and a grown-up gets mute, fullscreen and a "Start fresh" button. There is no losing, no timer and no score. It is free, with no ads, accounts or tracking, loads nothing from outside kidsmashgames.com, and needs a browser with WebGL for the 3D letters; without WebGL the keyboard, the voice and the pictures still work behind five big tappable letters. It is a big first load for a toddler game: about 3.7 MB, nearly all of it fetched before the first pop — 2 MB of letter models, 0.9 MB of pictures and 0.6 MB of recordings — after which nothing more is downloaded.
What we liked
- Every letter key pops the letter it belongs to, and the letter, its name and its picture all appear together
- A warm recorded voice says "ay is for apple" rather than reading out "capital A"
- Tapping works everywhere: on a jelly in the pool or on any of the 26 keys in the panel below
- Rapid key mashing never queues up a backlog of speech and pictures, so it stays calm
- No losing, no timer and no score, and free with no ads, accounts, tracking or anything loaded from other sites
What to know
- No parent lock: fullscreen does not block browser or system shortcuts
- A big first load for a toddler game: about 3.7 MB of models, pictures and recordings, nearly all of it before the first pop
- Needs WebGL for the wobbly letters, and the fullscreen button is hidden on iPhones
Verdict
Our alphabet game: a letter key pops a jelly letter, a voice names it and a picture turns up. Calm, free, ad-free and ours.
Best for: A toddler thumping the keyboard who is starting to notice that the letters mean something.
