What it is like
Octo Jelly is a soft-body physics toy by @vib3coded: a see-through peach octopus sitting on a table, built from a mesh of springy tetrahedra so that every poke ripples through the whole body. A child grabs any arm or the head with the mouse or a finger and pulls; it stretches like jelly and springs back when let go, wobbling until it settles. The N key or the Give it a nudge button makes the whole octopus hop, the arrow keys shove it about, and a right-button drag or the Turn the view button spins the camera. A grown-up can pick a peach, lagoon or ink colour, make the jelly firmer or softer with two sliders, slow everything to quarter speed, show the wire mesh or pause it. This is not a smash toy: most keys do nothing, the space bar pauses it and R resets it, so it suits a child who is happy to poke rather than hammer. There is no sound, no score and nothing to unlock, just the octopus and a short written note about how it works, which on a laptop screen sits over the nudge button while it is open. It is free, with no ads, no accounts and nothing saved, but it needs a browser with WebGPU (a current Chrome or Edge; Safari 26 has WebGPU too, but we have only tried it in Chrome), and a browser without it gets a short message instead of the octopus. It lives on chatgpt.site, where it was made, and that host is not cookie-free: it sets a visitor cookie of its own that lasts about three months, and its Cloudflare bot check sets two more (one for half an hour, one for a year) and loads one small script. Nothing else is loaded from anywhere.
What we liked
- Grab any arm or the head with a mouse or a finger, stretch it, let go and watch it wobble back
- A nudge key and button, arrow keys to shove it, and a camera you can spin and zoom
- Colour presets, firmness and damping sliders, quarter-speed slow motion and a wire-mesh view for curious older children
- No sound, no score, no timer and nothing to lose: it just keeps wobbling
- Free, with no ads, no accounts and nothing saved
What to know
- Not a smash toy: most keys do nothing, the space bar pauses it and R resets it
- Needs a WebGPU browser (a current Chrome or Edge; we have not tried Safari) and works the machine hard; without WebGPU it shows a short message with no way back to us
- No sound, no fullscreen button and no parent lock, and it lives on chatgpt.site, which sets three cookies: a three-month visitor cookie of its own and two from its Cloudflare bot check
Verdict
The squishiest toy in the directory: a jelly octopus that stretches, hops and always springs back. Free and ad-free, but WebGPU only and hosted on chatgpt.site.
Best for: A toddler or preschooler who likes to squish things on a tablet or with a mouse, with a grown-up nearby to press reset.
