What it is like
Pocketpal is a little handheld pet toy drawn in 3D, with a pixel pal living on its screen: Mochi the dino, Pip the ball of sunshine, Boba the cuddle buddy or Sprout the bean. Feed, Play, Cuddle and Nap buttons, on the page and on the toy itself, fill the tummy, happiness and energy bars, and the pal answers with a chime, a wiggle and a speech bubble. Smash mode is on by default: every letter, number, arrow and space bar press swaps in the next pal, counts a tap and sets off a burst of sparkles with the pressed key inside, and a switch turns it off for calmer play. Drag the toy to turn it round, double-click to bring it back, and pick one of four shell colours. Nothing runs out fast: the tummy drops a little every half minute while the page is open, never past a floor, and there is no game over. The pet and its stats are saved in the browser, with no account. It is free, with no ads or tracking, loads nothing from outside kidsmashgames.com, and needs a browser with WebGL and about a 2 MB download for the toy.
What we liked
- Four pixel pals on a 3D toy you can spin, with feed, play, cuddle and nap buttons that all do something you can see
- Smash mode: any letter, number, arrow or space bar brings the next pal, a chime and a shower of sparkles
- No scores to lose and no game over; the stats only drift a little while the page is open
- Mute, help, fullscreen and a smash-mode switch for a grown-up, all remembered on the device
- No ads, accounts or tracking, and nothing loaded from other sites
What to know
- No parent lock: fullscreen does not block browser or system shortcuts
- A busy page for a baby, with stats, buttons and a shell picker around the toy; it suits preschoolers best
- Needs WebGL and about a 2 MB download, and the fullscreen button is hidden on iPhones

Our pocket pet: a tiny 3D toy with four pals to feed and cuddle, and a smash mode for the smallest hands. Free, ad-free and ours.
Best for: A preschooler who wants something small to look after, with a smash mode for the little sibling.
