Smashy Kids play screen: a glowing letter a, a rainbow and a star on a dark, starry sky, with the exit × in the corner

What it is like

Smashy Kids opens on a short landing page with a Launch App button. Press it and the page goes fullscreen into a dark, starry sky whose colours slowly drift. Every key puts up a glowing letter, a shape or a star with a burst of dots and a short tone, and every tap on a touch screen sends out coloured rings and a star. It is calmer than the confetti sites, with nothing to win or lose. Getting out takes a double-click on the small × in the top-left corner: a single click only arms it, and one press of Escape did not close the game when we tried. We saw no ads and nothing to sign up for, though Google Analytics runs on the page.

What we liked

  • Goes fullscreen at launch, and leaving needs a double-click on the corner ×
  • Glowing letters, shapes and stars, with a tone on every key or tap
  • Taps work as well as keys, so it plays on a tablet
  • No ads and nothing to sign up for

What to know

  • Google Analytics runs on the page
  • A double-click is a lighter lock than a two-second hold; a toddler with a mouse could stumble on it
  • Tones only: the letters appear but are not spoken

Verdict

A calmer alternative to the confetti sites that works with taps as well as keys.

Best for: A toddler who does better with a calm, dark screen than with confetti.
