TinyFingers is the keyboard smash site that most parents land on first, usually from a short video of a baby cackling at a screen full of confetti. It deserves the attention: fullscreen, a hidden parent exit, keys and taps and clicks, several themes, no ads and no sign-up.
So why look for an alternative? A few reasons come up again and again:
- You want a timer or a clearer way to end the session.
- Your child has moved on to letters and numbers and wants to see them.
- You want no analytics at all, not just no ads.
- You want the strongest possible lockdown on a Windows laptop.
- TinyFingers changed, or was down, or just got boring after week three.

ToddlerSmash: for a clear end to the session
The closest like-for-like. It is bright, fullscreen and sound-on-every-key, with a theme picker. What it adds is a five-minute timer that counts down on screen and a hold-to-close button, so the session ends when you choose and not when a small hand finds the corner. Pick it when "time's up" is the hard part of your day.
TypeChars: for letters, numbers and zero tracking
The calm alternative. Instead of confetti, each key floats up as the letter or number that was pressed, on one of six scenes. The site says it runs no ads, no accounts and no analytics, and we saw no trackers when we checked, which makes it the most private option here. The parent controls are hidden the same way as TinyFingers (hold the top-left corner or type "parent"). Pick it from about age two, when the child starts looking for the letter rather than the burst.
Smashing Board: for variety
Five content packs (letters, numbers, animals, fruits, languages) chosen by a grown-up before play, with a big bouncing character and a sound per key. The exit is Ctrl+K, which no toddler will hit by accident. It does not go fullscreen on its own, so press F11 (or Control+Command+F on a Mac) after it loads. Pick it when the same confetti has stopped landing.
My Baby Wonder: for the most features, with a caveat
Four themes, spoken letters, musical notes and a proper Parent button with resume and exit. Feature for feature it is the most complete smash game we found. The caveat is that the site around it runs display ads. We saw none inside the game and we check weekly, but it is the one to open yourself first. Pick it for a tablet on a stand once you have had a look.
BabySmash.app: for the simplest possible toy
Stars, shapes and the occasional animal on a night sky, with a one-tap Fullscreen button, open source and made by a parent. No lock of its own; the site suggests Guided Access on iPad or app pinning on Android, which is honest advice. Pick it for the youngest players and for tablets with the device lock on.
Tiny Hands Play: for one bookmark that lasts years
Kaboom Keys is the smash game inside a free, ad-free collection that runs from six months to nine years, so the bookmark stays useful long after the smashing stops. The weak spot is that Escape exits instantly. Pick it when you want somewhere to grow into and you will be sitting alongside.
Baby Smash! for Windows: for a real lockdown
The 2008 original is a Windows program, not a website. Once it is running it owns the screen and the keyboard, so there is no browser, no Windows key and no desktop to fall out into. Free and open source. Pick it when the toddler has claimed a Windows laptop and you want it to be safe without watching.
